About Us

Our team consists of organizers, leaders, and educators. Each of us have different skills in various areas of expertise, working together towards a common goal.

We foster sick and unwanted dogs and cats, organize cost-effective sterilization and vaccination services, and educate the communities in Bali. Education forms a core part of what we do, explaining families how to take better care of their animals in hope the number of pets requiring our assistance will reduce in the future. It is wonderful to see animals who were once sick and ignored, becoming healthy and appreciated by their owners.

We would like to thank everyone who believes in our cause and is contributing in various ways. We wouldn’t have made this much progress without your help.

Sabine

Originally from Germany, Sabine, the founder of Little Steps Matter, has had a deep love and connection with animals for as long as she can remember. At the age of 6, she started to bring home animals in need. As a teenager she further developed her passion and love for horses, connecting with these animals on a deeper level.

After arriving in Bali in 1989, Sabine was very distressed by the amount of sick and injured dogs and cats she saw roaming the streets. Over the years, she took them in for healing and rehabilitation and looked for suitable owners who would adopt these once abandoned animals.

Sabine has devoted her life to helping animals in Bali, in order for them to have a second chance at a long, happy and healthy life.

Jochen

Sabine’s brother Jochen moved to Bali in 2000. He has been an avid student of local history and culture for many years, before he started one of the first traditional off-the-beaten-track tour companies.

20 years down the road, his focus became more in tune with the needs of Little Steps Matter, where he got active and created awareness, especially among his guests, for the support of animals in need.

Jochen and his sister Sabine now work together to educate local communities and families about fair domestic animal treatment, particularly cats and dogs, using an empathetic approach.

Putu Krista

Even as a little girl, Krista has tried to help stray cats and dogs in her home village in Bali. She watched how her father, a local farmer and healer, gave his time and best effort to help sick animals — constantly brought up to him by desperate neighbours and friends.

Married to Jochen, Krista now works alongside the Kaufmann siblings to deliver their message to local communities using her Balinese native tongue. With her kind personality, she finds the most patient and empathetic approach to connect and earn trust from people as we tour from house to house, teaching about animal care and basic medical treatment.

Beate

“Beate came to Bali in 1995 and instantly fell in love with the traditional Balinese culture, dance, music and food. One year after arrival she met her Balinese husband Nyoman.

since 2000, they developed different businesses together, such as restaurants, hotels and more which are all environmentally friendly. She supports the Manuksesa Children Project since 2008, which helps underprivileged children to receive education.

Beate now has a consulting business for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions at her company Pertiwi Consulting. At Little Steps Matter, she helps with legal advice and handles official documents which we need as a local foundation.”

Claudia

When Claudia first came to Bali in 1987, she fell in love with the island and met her husband. Together they developed a jewellery business and both retired in 2018.

Now Claudia lives in Kediri next to the foundation. She and Sabine are neighbours, and both share a deep passion for horses. Together they’ve been practicing natural horsemanship for many years.

Claudia’s horse Max and several rescued cats are part of her family. She truly is the Cat Lover in our organisation and she fosters many rescued cats. She takes care of the accounting and administration for the foundation.
